Measuring behavior in-the-wild

This article describes research that informed how Habit Bandz was designed. It is not a claim about treatment efficacy, and Habit Bandz does not diagnose or treat any condition.

Self-regulation: a transdiagnostic construct

Many specific behaviors, like picking, craving, and compulsive checking, share one underlying capacity: self-regulation, the ability to hold back a response when a cue triggers an urge. Meta-analyses of go/no-go and stop-signal task performance find altered response inhibition across a wide range of psychiatric conditions, and NIMH's Research Domain Criteria framework treats cognitive control as a dimension that cuts across diagnoses.

The practical question is how to measure that capacity where it operates: in daily life, at the moment a cue appears.

Where EMA fits in

Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) captures thoughts, feelings, and behavior in the moment they occur, instead of relying on what someone remembers later.

That matters because urges rise, crest, and pass. Picking urges cluster around evening screen time. Nicotine cravings spike on the commute. Food noise fluctuates through the day. A once-a-week questionnaire reduces all of that to a single number.

EMA has one consistent caveat in the literature: if capture is burdensome or too frequent, people stop doing it.

Self-report has a second weakness beyond forgetting: bias. The dietary literature shows people underreport foods they feel judged for, at magnitudes large enough to distort research. Brief, private, in-the-moment ratings reduce both problems. And one signal has no bias at all: engagement. A participant can give an inaccurate rating, but session logs either exist or they don't. You know for a fact whether someone used the tool, when, and for how long.

Food noise, impulsivity, and self-regulation

Food noise means persistent, intrusive thoughts about food. The term spread because patients on GLP-1 medications kept reporting the same effect: the noise gets quieter. Research ties food noise to craving and food-cue reactivity, which makes it a self-regulation problem: a cue triggers a craving, and the question is whether the response can be inhibited. The field's first instrument, the five-item Food Noise Questionnaire from Pennington Biomedical, published in Obesity, is deliberately brief, and work presented at ECO 2026 tracked food noise alongside obesity medication and behavioral intervention.

Because food noise fluctuates and spikes around cues, momentary ratings can show when it is loudest and what precedes it. A total score cannot. The two complement each other.

How Habit Bandz fits

A Habit Bandz smart fidget session is the capture. One gesture to launch, quick 0–100 ratings before and after, and the timestamp, duration, optional location, and optional heart rate recorded automatically. Each session also includes a brief go/no-go task, so response inhibition can be tracked across treatment, time of day, and context. Nothing to fill out later.

Because the session gives the participant something to do with the craving, engagement rises exactly when the urge does. Survey compliance works the other way: it drops when people are struggling most.

GLP-1 tapering makes this concrete. When patients come off medications like Ozempic, cravings often return and weight regain is common, and there is no standard way to teach craving management through that transition. A session in those moments does two jobs at once: it records when and how strongly the food noise returns, and it gives the patient a behavior to practice while the craving passes.
