Measuring behavior in-the-wild
This article describes research that informed how Habit Bandz was designed. It is not a claim about treatment efficacy, and Habit Bandz does not diagnose or treat any condition.
What is ecological momentary assessment?
Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) captures thoughts, feelings, and behavior in the moment they occur, rather than relying on what someone remembers later.
Why does momentary measurement matter?
Basic examples make this concrete: urges to pick that cluster around evening screen time, nicotine cravings that spike on the commute, or "food noise" — persistent, intrusive thoughts about food, closely tied to craving and food-cue reactivity in the eating-behavior literature. Food noise shows why measurement design matters: the field's current instrument, the five-item Food Noise Questionnaire validated at Pennington Biomedical and published in Obesity, is deliberately brief — and because food noise fluctuates through the day, quick momentary check-ins are a natural complement to a total score, showing when the noise is loudest and what tends to precede it.
Urges are dynamic — they rise, crest, and pass — so a single retrospective questionnaire misses most of the picture. EMA research describes better self-monitoring and more personalized care, with one consistent caveat: if capture is burdensome or too frequent, people stop doing it. Research also notes that wearable signals and self-report don't always measure the same thing, which is why pairing them is valuable.
Retrospective self-report has a second weakness beyond forgetting: people shade the truth. The dietary self-report literature documents social-desirability bias — under-reporting foods people feel judged for and over-reporting "good" ones — at magnitudes large enough to distort diet–disease research. Momentary check-ins don't eliminate that bias, but brief, private, in-the-moment ratings reduce both the recall gap and the pressure to reconstruct a tidy story after the fact.
How Habit Bandz fits
That caveat drove the design. A Habit Bandz session is the capture — launched in one gesture, with quick 0–100 urge and distress check-ins before and after, all timestamped. Self-regulation: a transdiagnostic construct
Underneath the specific behaviors sits a shared construct: self-regulation — the capacity to inhibit a prepotent response and steady arousal when a cue triggers an urge. The research base treats this as transdiagnostic. Meta-analyses of go/no-go and stop-signal task performance find altered response inhibition across a wide range of psychiatric conditions, and NIMH's Research Domain Criteria framework treats cognitive control as a dimension that cuts across diagnoses rather than belonging to any one of them.
Habit Bandz utilizes the sensors already on the phone and watch to capture these constructs more simply for researchers and clinicians — a brief go/no-go task, quick EMA check-ins, and wearable sensing, all in one session. The goal is to make in-the-moment self-regulation easier to study across psychiatric, neurological, and metabolic research questions: does it shift with treatment, time of day, craving intensity, or context?
